The author was educated at Wake Forest College, the Medical College of Virginia, the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, and did his cardiology fellowship at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He served five years in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps, including two years of active duty in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Dr. Newton has practiced medicine and cardiology in Roanoke, Virginia since 1960, where he currently resides with his wife Jane. The two have four grown children
