Bradley Free Clinic Pharmacist Selected VCU Outstanding Preceptor

Bradley Free Clinic does more than provide services to the area’s underserved. They also serve a critical role in developing the skills of the next generation of medical practitioners.

Pharmacist James Black was recently named an Outstanding Preceptor by Virginia Commonwealth University. A preceptor is a teacher in a clinical setting who will help students grow from a novice into a competent, professional pharmacist. During experiential education, student pharmacists are taught by experienced pharmacist preceptors.

The Outstanding Preceptor Award recognizes preceptors who have demonstrated excellence in educating students on rotations.

“We are very proud of James and this exceptional recognition for his work,” said Bradly Free Clinic Executive Director Janine Underwood.

In addition to supervising staff and volunteers, Black manages all aspects of the pharmacy department at the clinic, including filling prescriptions, engaging in patient education, conducting chart reviews for medication and vaccine administration, and acts as advocate assuring the most services possible to eligible patients.

VCU students nominate preceptors for Outstanding Preceptor Awards during their rotations. Here are comments from one of the students who supported the nomination:

“He is uplifting, supportive, and truly wants the best for all of those he interacts with. Mr. Black goes above and beyond the call of duty for his students, making them feel valued, important, and integrated into the team at the clinic. I will genuinely go forward as a better pharmacist and a better person due to Mr. Black. And his personal impact on me can’t be overstated.”

Located at 1240 3rd St. SW, the Bradley Free Clinic provides free medical, dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy care to the underserved through volunteer health care professionals. Many of their volunteers are among the most respected in the field throughout the region. The Clinic has also expanded hours of services with a full-time nurse practitioner and part-time dentist.
