DEVOTIONAL: Seek Peace And Prosperity For Your City

Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you (…) Jeremiah 29:7a (NIV)

Many know the promise of Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Fewer know the command that follows it, that our ability to find God is directly related to how closely we seek Him. “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (v. 13).

But in this passage where the Prophet Jeremiah is speaking to Jews carried into exile, Jeremiah told them to seek something else, too: the welfare of their city. “Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper” (v. 7).

When you’re living in a community that is peaceful, prosperous and healthy, everyone benefits: children, families, the elderly, and you. Streets and neighborhoods are safe; teachers are teaching; coaches are coaching; goods and services are being produced and consumed. That’s the picture that God tells us to work for. It’s not just day-dreaming, but what practical steps can we actually take, to create and foster this kind of positive environment? And God tells us to pray for our city too, that includes for its leaders, churches, schools, businesses, marriages and families, first responders, clubs, media, etc.

Take the next step: What can you do to contribute to the health and wholeness of our community? Will you be praying for your city and community?
