Transitional Blessings

I believe there to be a distinction between a completed and a transitional blessing. A completed blessing might be the birth of a baby, or perhaps, a ‘near miss’ where a seemingly unavoidable tragedy is somehow avoided.

Blessings of the transitional variety might be the donation of a unit of blood. While a good and generous thing to do, it is not in and of itself a blessing, said miracle coming for the patient who needs it. Add to that the fact that the donor so often won’t know the name of the person who receives it, yet, for that someone to have the blood infused, first another has to donate. A transitional blessing.

So too is a story that happened to my Sabrina: On her way home with two injured critters, she observed a small, forlorn, black kitten on the curb in Salem, mewing for help from the cars which whizzed by her. Needless to say, once seen by my wife, said kitten did not remain abandoned for long.

Sabrina took it to the vet: fleas, weakness, severe anemia, possible parasitic infestation; all treatable.

After an interval of care and observation, we bought the kitten home hoping he might make a suitable playmate for our other new kitten [yeah, the one who thinks he’s a Doberman.] But, strange to say, they didn’t get along at all; much hissing, spitting and swatting. Not knowing what to do, we took her back to the vet. If she’s not adopted in one week, we’d take her back home and deal with ‘kitten issues.’

Strange to say, at the vet’s office, our kitten soon buddied up with a pair of kittens; sisters. All three were adopted by a lovely family [with Sabrina’s usual injunction to the vet: If anything goes wrong with the adoption, we get them back. Agreed.]

The family named them ‘The Spice girls, and our little female was named ‘Nutmeg.’  Cute.

So my Sabrina did a good deed [a transitional blessing] and God took it the rest of the way. It is here suggested the necessity of unseen linkages: one good deed, in and of itself leads to another, and another. This inter-relatedness may be critical to some blessings. Maybe that’s why it can be a good thing to go out of our way to help others; maybe in this way, we become emissaries, and perhaps that helps Heaven do its work. I’m sure they don’t mind; in fact, God might count on it…
