The Roanoke Valley Academy of Medicine hosted the President’s Gala February 7, 2014 at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center. Nearly 200 guest attended in which Dr. John “Lucky” Garvin was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dr. Garvin has the longest tenure of any Emergency Medicine Physician in the United States. He played an instrumental role in establishing the 16 county Western Virginia Emergency Medical Services System and also played an important role in the formation of the Bradley Free Clinic, serving as Medical Director from 1976-1999. Project Access works closely with Bradley Free Clinic.
The evening event included a cocktail hour with entertainment that included a long horn owl from the wildlife rescue that Dr. Garvin and his wife Sabrina are very involved with. During dinner presentations were made by RVAM president James Bailey, Jon Bartlett – CEO Lewis Gale Regional Health Systems, Dr. Mark Watts M.D.- president of the Board of Project Access of the Roanoke Valley and a patient testimonial.
All proceeds from the evening’s event will benefit Project Access, a non-profit that coordinates health care services for the working low-income, uninsured residents of the Roanoke Valley. Since 2004 Project Access’s provider list has nearly doubled from 333 providers to nearly 600 providers today. Project Access has served 7,129 patients and provided services valued at $19.1 million dollars since May 2004. The organization was able to provide $1.2 million dollars worth of services in 2013 alone.
