BOB BROWN: Derelict Christians

“Providence has given to our people the choice of their ruler, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.” – John Jay, First Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court and co-author of the Federalist Papers.

Post-modern historians, bilious with bias, must deny established facts to sleep at night. Never are they so sonorously deep in their sleep as when they deny that America was founded as a Christian nation. The historical record substantiates America was from its beginning established as “One Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all…”

The opening line of the US Declaration of Independence reminds us of God, our Creator: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

While the U.S. Constitution does not mention God, nearly all state constitutions reference either God or the divine, according to a 2017 analysis. References to God also appear in the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance and on U.S. currency.

Eighteenth century Christians labored under the heat and light of day and candles at night with mind, heart, and Spirit to create a “more perfect union,” this after costly war.

“While often categorized as a democracy, the United States is more accurately defined as a constitutional federal republic.”

One of the most important rights of American citizens is the right to vote.

Since WW II, “counterculture” terrorism has successfully invaded our republic mostly unopposed. No institution has been spared.

“Political correctness,” seemed harmless in the beginning, but it was a false front for their new meaning of words having limitless access to lies, deception, and confusion.

Significant numbers of citizens, including Christians, are discouraged to vote. Social terrorists promulgate that “Politics is corrupt. Do not waste your time. Chose a wholesome means to help improve “social justice” in the nation, but why become part of corrupt political filth?”

The lies are working. Ugly lies, easily made attractive by media optics, is convincing some Christians it is immoral to vote.  An otherwise intelligent clergyman said, “I could never vote for a morally corrupt candidate.”

My reply, “compared to whom?”

“Depending on how ‘evangelical’ is defined, estimates of the evangelical population in the US range from 6–35%. In 2016, Wheaton College’s Institute for the Study of American Evangelicals estimated that 30–35% of the population, or around 90–100 million people, were evangelical.

“Evangelicals make up the majority of US Protestants, with 55% of Protestants identifying as evangelical in 2015.

“The term evangelical comes from the word ‘evangel’, which refers to the good news of Jesus Christ—that Jesus came to save humanity. Evangelicals hold four cardinal beliefs.

  • The Bible is inerrant.
  • The only way to salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Individuals must accept salvation for themselves.
  • The need to evangelize.”    (A. Abdull, Iviews, July 7, 2024.)

John wrote the most diverse, inclusive, inspiring, and hopeful words in any language: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.   For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”  John 3:16, 17.

Years ago, someone writing about a class I taught, asked, “Are you a Christian, Dr. Brown?

“Yes,” I replied immediately, adding, “I became a Christian when I was 12.”

I was then asked, “Are you “born again?”

Thinking of myself as an intellectual, aware that the term, “born again,” was used by some as a pejorative, I said, “No, I’m not with that crowd, but my wife is!”

I was, most decisively, demonstrating my extremely limited knowledge of Christianity as revealed in the Bible.  Jesus told Nicodemus, a learned Jewish Pharisee, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”  John 3:3. Nicodemus, thinking literally, not spiritually, said he could not understand such a possibility.

 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.”  John 3:5. In other words, the spiritual metamorphosis from sinner to “saved” by a Savior, Jesus Christ, is such an extreme transformation it can most accurately compared to the newness of birth.  Christians are those saved by grace, through faith. Christians must surrender their life to the King to dwell eternally in His Kingdom.

Isaiah told us to urgently pursue the Lord: “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near.  Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.”  Isaiah 55:6,7.

On 9/28/2024, Dr. Robert Jeffress, First Baptist Church, Dallas, preached on Politics.  He cited several biblical references indicating God’s emphasis on the importance of government: “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”

Romans 13:1, written when Rome was ruled by Nero whose disgusting conduct included burning people alive to illuminate his festival banquets.

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice;
But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.” Proverbs 29:2

“Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and [reverence.” 1 Timothy 2:1, 2.

Dr. Jeffress said morality is legislated by our elected representatives. God cares about morality and those elected legislate laws affecting the sanctity of life, and the sanctity of marriage, to mention a few.

Four questions Christians must ask when voting for the president of the US, according to Dr. Jeffress:

  1. Is the candidate a Christian?
  2. Do the candidate’s policies align with the Bible?
  3. What are the candidate’s views on the nation of Israel?
  4. Does the candidate get things done?

Many evangelical Christians do not vote.  The nonvoting evangelical’s moral sin, perhaps outside their self-awareness and self-regard, is their contribution to moral corruption by refusing to vote in presidential elections.  May God forgive us both as I unworthily judge these Derelict Christians and seek to kick their butts into the voting booth.
