If you take out much of Northern Virginia, Richmond area, and Tidewater area, Presidential candidate Kamala Harris only received 40% of Virginia’s vote total in the 2024 POTUS race. Yet she received all Virginia’s 13 electoral votes. That is hardly fair!
It must be noted that so many Northern Virginians do not work in Virginia, that so many non-Virginians work in Northern Virginia, and that so many Northern Virginians are not even from Virginia.
West Virginia left Virginia because of too much neglect and divergence. Perhaps Western Virginia may need to do the same. However West Virginia had highly mitigating circumstances such as its unwillingness to engage in an armed rebellion against the USA in the American Civil War. It is truly doubtful Western Virginia has reached that stage as of yet in which secession is a necessity.
Virginia should adapt an electoral voting system so that Northern Virginia, Tidewater, and Richmond do not dominate the entire state. Each congressional district should be allocated an electoral vote. The POTUS candidate who receives its highest number of popular votes gets that electoral vote. Additionally the POTUS candidate who receives the highest number of popular votes throughout the state gets the two at-large electoral votes. This measure would enhance representative governance.
