Opera Roanoke proudly launches its landmark 50th Anniversary Season with an unforgettable evening of passion, drama, and soaring music. Love and Sacrifice: A Tribute to the Heart of Opera Roanoke will take place on September 21 at Jefferson Center, featuring the final acts of three of opera’s most beloved works: Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Verdi’s La Traviata, and Massenet’s Thaïs.

This celebratory concert not only opens a milestone season but also pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Maestro Steven White, Opera Roanoke’s Artistic Director of more than two decades, who will lead the Opera Roanoke Orchestra and a cast of acclaimed singers in his final performance with the company.

“Our 50th Anniversary Season is about honoring the past, celebrating the present, and looking toward the future,” said Brooke Tolley, General Director of Opera Roanoke. “Love and Sacrifice embodies the timeless power of opera; stories of passion and loss, told through some of the most glorious music ever written. It’s the perfect way to begin this landmark season.”

The program includes:

  • Act III of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly — a tale of devotion and heartbreak.
  • Act III of Verdi’s La Traviata — love and sacrifice on the brink of tragedy.
  • Act II of Massenet’s Thaïs — redemption and spiritual transformation.

Audiences will be transported by Opera Roanoke’s full orchestra and an extraordinary cast of guest artists in a concert that highlights the company’s commitment to presenting stories that move audiences.
