Snow, snow, go away. Accumulate another day.
That may well have been the battle cry of the North Cross girls soccer team on Friday April 5th, less than 24 hours after nearly five inches of snow from an unexpected storm had blanketed Thomas Field on the North Cross campus, playing havoc on a scheduled lacrosse contest that was already in progress.
By haltime, Carlisle was probably hoping for a quick return of the blizzard, as North Cross cruised to the 8-0 victory in a rare match stopped by rule 20 minutes through the second half due to the score differential at that point.
The Raiders had dominated from the outset, pressuring the Carlisle net while rarely allowing the Chief offense to advance past midfield.
When Raider freshman Lissa Smith roofed a nifty shot past the Carlisle keeper into the top of the North Cross goal with less than a minute left in the opening half, the Raiders took a 5-0 lead to the break, and were well on their way to sealing the win.
North Cross added three more goals in the first part of the second half, bringing the referee’s whistle for the slaughter rule stoppage 20-minutes into the final frame. The Raiders were led by Smith, India Helmer, Morgan Sturm and Hope Pollock, each of whom netted two goals.
North Cross followed the Carlisle win with a 3-1 victory over Trinity School on Saturday April 6th in Fairfax. Senior Lynsey Barker netted two goals for the Raiders and freshman Sarah Mauer also found the net for North Cross. Gussie Revercomb picked up the win in goal.
The Raiders then went on to net a big conference win over LCA by a score of 2-1. Anna Robison scored first early in the second half and Avery Sturm netted the game winning goal on a header with 6 minutes left in the game. Sarah Maurer shut out the Bull Dogs in the second half to close out the win. The Raiders are now 7-0 on the season.
