Miller & Rhoads Tearoom Returns for a Day

Sarah Kohler, a former Tearoom hostess, says she is excited to relive the memories of the Tearoom at the June 14 event.

On Saturday, June 14, the Miller & Rhoads Tearoom will live again in the Roanoke Valley.  Presented by the Peacock-Harper Culinary History Collection at Virginia Tech, the event will begin at 4 PM and is being hosted by 2nd Helpings Café located at 1502 Williamson Road.

“We are so excited to have 2nd helpings host this event, and look forward to the revival of the original Miller & Rhoads recipes,” says Dorothy Herndon of the Peacock-Harper Culinary History Collection.

“What makes this event even more special is the fact that some of the cups, pots, and china used, as well as the outfits being modeled, are coming from the donations for sale at 2nd Helpings.   Guests are being encouraged to bring, and wear, memorabilia from the days of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s when the Miller& Rhoads Tearoom was in its prime,” says Georgia Crump, 2nd Helpings Café Manager.

One of the models for the event will be Sarah Kohler, whose mother, Bea, was one of the tearooms’ more popular models. “She loved modeling the clothes and customers would actually follow her to the dressing rooms and say they wanted everything she was wearing! My sister Drew Gibbons and I were actually hostesses in the tea room for a few summers.  It was an excellent place for lunch, and we really enjoyed talking with the business men and women that came in.  I am really looking forward to modeling for this event!” she says.

A limited number of tickets ($14) are available and can be purchased in advance at 2nd helpings café.  All proceeds from the event will benefit the Rescue Mission’s Hospitality Dining Room where homeless families are daily guests.  Last year the Rescue Mission served 291,609 meals.

2nd helpings, a ministry of the Roanoke Rescue Mission, is located at 1502 Williamson Road.  A high end resale retail shop, a destination  gallery representing the largest selection of local artists, many of which are often on site doing workshops and visual demonstrations and an eclectic café with baking on the premises all combine to make the  2nd Helpings a uniquely enjoyable experience.   For more information about 2nd helpings, please visit www.2ndhelpings.org, or call (540) 491-9409.
