Wild Bill’s Weekly Sports Roundup

Where are you, Nancy Reagan? I could have used your help.

Good thing there were no nasty memos from The Chief.

I think maybe Nancy got word of my invitation to help being a psychic contributor to my football predictions.

I won’t say week-one was a bust without her, but it wasn’t the blue ribbon performance I was expecting. At least it had a winning record, despite some outside forces errantly pushing me away from the quantum realm of accuracy

That being said, a couple of Nancy’s axioms mysteriously came my way over the weekend, and I’d be foolish to look a gift horse in the mouth.

First, it was pointed out that Nancy once said, “I have been criticized for for turning to astrology, but after a while, I reached the point where I didn’t care.” Touche, Nancy.

Also from Nancy, “A lot of what acting is…..is paying attention.”

Now, confident that the former first lady is truly on my side, I bring you this week’s look at the ” Big-11″. Raise the curtain. The show must go on.

SALEM at PATRICK HENRY: Arrive early for this one, as PH stadium may be full and spectators turned away at some point, per PH officials. Both teams are undefeated and loaded with talent. Salem won 28-21 in a barnburner last year. PH is looking to reverse the outcome on its turf. The word is the S in Salem is in the cusp of Capricorn. Salem- 28 Patrick Henry- 23

WILLIAM FLEMING at MARTINSVILLE: One of Fleming’s three wins last year came from the Bulldogs in a 21-19 squeaker. Fleming started 2013 with two wins. This Colonel team looks prepared to make it two years in a row.William Fleming was an Aquarius so the water flows their way. William Fleming- 30 Martinsville- 20

CAVE SPRING at NORTHSIDE: Another matchup of two undefeateds. Cave Spring will need some quick-score magic akin to week-one to stay with the Vikings. Northside may be a tough draw at Jim Hickam Field. Northside- 34 Cave Spring- 25

WILLIAM BYRD at HIDDEN VALLEY: Byrd invades Dwight Bogle Stadium for the second week in a row. This week, the young Terriers will have their hands full with a more experienced Titan team than the one they beat in Vinton last season. Hidden Valley- 35 William Byrd- 10

JAMES RIVER at GLENVAR: The Knights of JR won this one in 2013 by the score of 27-20. Glenvar has momentum and confidence after their win in Galax last Friday night. Highlander Heaven may not be so heavenly for James River this time around. Glenvar- 38 James River- 24

LORD BOTETOURT at RUSTBURG: The Cavaliers ran away with this on in 2013, 45-0. It should be closer in Rustburg, but not enough to alter the outcome. Expect LB to again call the shots. No seance needed here. Lord Botetourt- 37 Rustburg- 6

ROANOKE CATHOLIC at BRUNSWICK ACADEMY: Brunswick won only once in 2013 and forfeited one game. They fell to the Celtics 21-12 last year and gave up 54 points in their opener this year. Looks like a Catholic win on the road according to the stars. Roanoke Catholic- 23 Brunswick Academy- 15

BLESSED SACRAMENT-HUGUENOT at NORTH CROSS (SAT) North Cross dominated last Saturday in a takedown of VES as the Raiders looked strong on both sides of the ball. BSH gave up 53 points at Atlantic Shores in week-one. Nancy’s favorite color is red. That seals it for me. North Cross- 40 Blessed Sacrament- 27

On to baseball where, at press time, the Salem Red Sox were deadlocked one game apiece in their best-of-3 series with Myrtle Beach. The deciding game was set for Friday night in Myrtle Beach where the winner advances to play Potomac for the Mills Cup Championship. A Salem win means baseball returns to Salem Memorial Ballpark in September.

Finally, a swing through the mailbag where one reader expresses astonishment that a president’s wife would rely on a soothsayer for advice.

Dear Wild Bill: Unbelievable info on Ronald and Nancy Reagan regarding their reliance on astrologers. I checked you out and it’s on the mark. Am I right that this was an obscure stunt from Pennsylvania Avenue? (Harriet/ Parts unknown)

To the contrary, Harriet. Mary Todd Lincoln attended seances trying to contact her dead son Willie. Likewise, Edith Wilson and Florence Harding consulted the same clairvoyant. See, you always learn something when you read this column.

Until next week, send your psychic questions to [email protected]

Maybe The Chief should consider me for an astrology column. And, you naysayers will quit laughing at my Ouija Board.
