Wild Bill’s Sports Roundup!

Bill TurnerWell, the initial Roanoke Star restaurant review is in the books.

Wednesday afternoon was the time, and the Tanglewood Macado’s was the place. It was The Chief and myself taking in the culinary talents of the Macado’s chefs.

At The Chief’s discretion we decided to dine al fresco. For you out of state readers, that means we ate lunch outdoors.

Although al fresco dining was popularized by the Piazza San Marco near the grand canal in Venice, Italy, we settled for the Macado’s patio high above the Tanglewood Mall parking lot. No big deal since there wasn’t a boat in sight, much less a grand canal anywhere around Rt. 419. Yes, you always learn something when you read this column.

Reviews always begin with service and presentation, and our waitress, Jennifer, made sure our visit would be exceptional. I think it may have been my Loudmouth pants that had her in such a great mood.

The Chief and I decided to forego an appetizer since escargot can be testy in mid-afternoon. Naturally, we both ordered the Wild Bill Burger (found on the right-upper side of the menu for those needing reference points). The Chief immediately gave this knife-skewered entree a thumbs-up, stating it was the best burger he had ever eaten. I concurred, thus giving Macado’s an unanimous five-star review. We were too full to try desert, so we’ll return another time for pastry and a pilsner.

On to sports where we first address a name error in last week’s column. New First Tee lead instructor Bill Rader was a PGA apprentice to Billy McBride, III (not McGuire). Sorry, PGA members, for that boo-boo.

Mark your calendars for next week’s Scott Robertson Memorial Junior Golf Tournament., May 15-17 at Roanoke Country Club. Come out to see many of the best girls and boys junior golfers in the world compete in the 32nd annual event.

The Roanoke Valley Sports Club is set for one of its biggest nights in history as Charlie Moir Night, honoring the legendary college basketball coach, comes to the Salem Civic Center Monday, May 18th. Former players and basketball associates will join Charlie to remember his long career that included heading the Virginia Tech program and winning the NCAA Small College National Championship in 1972 while the head coach at Roanoke College. The 5:45 social is followed by the 6:15 dinner meeting. Guests and prospective members are invited to this special evening. Contact Maggie Drewry at 540-353-1103 to purchase tickets or for additional information.

No better time to catch the Salem Red Sox than than the upcoming stretch of home games that includes 14 days of baseball in 18 days at Salem Memorial Stadium. That stretch begins Friday, May 8th and continues through May 25th, with the only break May 15-18 when the Salem Sox hit the road for three games and enjoy an off-day May 18th.

Congratulations are in order for Patrick Henry High School’s Rachel Johnson, the 2015 Allstate Foundation/VHSL Achievement Award Group 6A winner in academic activities. The Allstate Foundation awards a girls and boy athlete-of-the-year along with an academic award winner in each of the VHSL six school classifications. Good work, Rachel.

Now, a couple Wild Bill thank-you cards go out this week. First, to the Scott Robertson Memorial golf committee for the media day invitation on Thursday at Roanoke Country Club. Very enjoyable.

Second, to the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke for the invitation to attend the 20th annual Pancake Day and Auction at The Berglund Center last Saturday (as seen in The Star earlier this week). Ditto to Kiwanis past-president Ken Briggs for his time with the feature interview. But, I’m still suspicious over the pancake-goer who told Briggs she was superstitous, and only ate square pancakes. Is there really a recipe for square flapjacks?

Sounds like The Chief and I better get set for a restaurant review at IHOP. Square pancakes……..are you kidding me?

Until next time, stir up some batter and flip your questions to [email protected].
