Biotechnology Conference To Highlight Medical Science / Diversity in STEM Education

The Biotechnology Educators Conference will take place on July 25-27 at the Biocomplexity Institute of Virginia Tech and Fralin Life Science Institute. Attendees can learn more about bio-printers and new strides in medical research relevant to biotechnology education.

Educators at the Biocomplexity Institute of Virginia Tech and Fralin Life Science Institute are gearing up for the 2018 Biotechnology Educators Conference on July 25-27.

This year’s Biotechnology Educator’s Conference has many exciting new offerings for both new and seasoned educators with expanded lectures and workshops focusing on medical and life sciences.

Biraj Patel, assistant professor at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and section chief of neurointerventional surgery, will discuss the latest research in stroke medicine. Additional talks about bioscience education and preparing students for the workforce will be highlights of the conference.

The conference will be held on Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus at the  Fralin Life Science Institute and the Biocomplexity Institute.

“This year we have diverse and fascinating lectures and workshops for biotechnology educators,” said Kristy Collins, director of education and outreach at the Biocomplexity Institute of Virginia. “From inclusion in the STEM workforce to bioprinting, there’s something for everyone.”

For new educators, a Biotechnology Boot Camp will be held on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Spots are first come, first served.

Educators have a plethora of fascinating workshop options, including using 3D visualization software in the classroom, next-generation sequencing data analysis, and a viral demonstration from MiniOne, among others.

SE3D will also give workshops on bioprinting to familiarize educators with this exciting new frontier in biotechnology education. Educators can learn how to print scaffolds and cells with SE3D’s mini-bioprinters.
