To help promote an informed citizenry, The Roanoke Star asked the three candidates running to be Roanoke City’s next mayor the following question:

What do you believe are the 3 biggest challenges now facing Roanoke City, and what do you plan to do to remedy these challenges, if you win?

Current City Councilmember Stephanie Moon Reynolds is running as an independent and gave this response.

“Addressing homelessness is critical, and we must prioritize collaboration with local organizations. By working together, we can provide not only shelter but also comprehensive support services that empower individuals to reintegrate into society. Engaging community members in these efforts will foster a supportive environment and create lasting change.

“The housing market presents significant challenges, particularly as rising property taxes and costs create hardships for many homeowners. To tackle this issue, we need to incentivize the development of affordable housing options, especially in struggling neighborhoods. Involving local stakeholders in the planning process will ensure that these solutions reflect the needs and desires of the community.

“Safety concerns, particularly regarding gun violence, are prevalent. By investing in community policing and outreach initiatives, we can build trust between law enforcement and residents. Encouraging open dialogue and community forums will allow us to collaboratively identify and address the root causes of violence, creating a safer environment for everyone.

“Finally, areas suffering from blight negatively impact property values and community pride. Prioritizing revitalization efforts requires community involvement at every stage, from planning to execution. By engaging residents in these initiatives, we can foster a sense of ownership and pride in our neighborhoods, making Roanoke a more vibrant place to live.

“By addressing these pressing issues through collaboration and community involvement—homelessness, housing affordability, safety, and blight—we can create a thriving, safe, and inclusive Roanoke for everyone.”

The last day to vote is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
