Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation Announces New Director

Governor Glenn Youngkin has announced that Tiffany Robinson has been appointed as the new Director of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT). Robinson brings nearly 15 years of distinguished experience in state and local government, with a proven track record of leadership in strategic policy development, public administration, and community-focused initiatives.

“I am very excited to welcome Tiffany Robinson to lead DRPT,” said Secretary of Transportation W. Sheppard Miller III. “Her extensive background in public policy, strategic operations, and community development fully equip her to advance Virginia’s rail and public transportation goals. We look forward to the energy and experience she will bring to the department and to the continuation of her distinguished track record of success.”

Transitioning from her most recent role as Deputy Chief of Staff in the Governor’s Office, Robinson has been a dedicated partner to the transportation team since September 2023. In addition to transportation, Robinson’s portfolio in the Governor’s Office has spanned critical areas, including labor, administration, health and human resources, and agriculture.

Sharing her vision for the role, Robinson said, “I am honored to join the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and am excited to lead such an important agency that plays a vital role in connecting communities and enhancing mobility across the Commonwealth. I look forward to collaborating with our partners and stakeholders to build on DRPT’s strong foundation and to drive forward initiatives that improve the quality of life for all Virginians.”

Prior to her tenure in Virginia, Robinson served as the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, where she managed a workforce of over 1,800 employees and an operating budget of $1.7 billion during the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Robinson’s career also features impactful roles as a Deputy Chief of Staff in the Maryland Governor’s Office and as Assistant Secretary in Maryland’s Department of Housing and Community Development. Her contributions to housing, community development, and regional transit-oriented projects reflect her deep-rooted dedication to public service and economic development.

A graduate of the University of Maryland Baltimore County with a bachelor’s degree in political science, Robinson also earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law.

Robinson’s vision and strategic acumen are expected to enhance DRPT’s mission to promote and improve public transportation, rail, and transportation demand management across Virginia.

Her appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the Department as it continues to strengthen its commitment to connecting the Commonwealth and fostering sustainable mobility solutions.
