Salem overcame a 21-6 first quarter deficit and held on to defeat William Fleming last Friday night at the new Fleming Stadium. Fleming scored on its first three possessions of the game and appeared to have Salem on the ropes before the Spartan defense stiffened and the powerful Salem runnng game led the comeback. A late-game drive by the Colonels to the Salem 6-yard line was negated by a controversial call that turned the ball over to Salem, allowing the Spartans to run out the clock. Salem improved to 5-0 on the season as the Colonels dropped to 0-5.

Dear Reader,
The Salem-William Fleming was a great game and it was well-officiated with the exception of that one controversial call. It is too bad that game was possibly decided by an obvious bad call. In general,if an official is not certain of a call beyond a reasonable doubt, then a no-call is in order.
Let players, and not officials, decide games.
However, Salem deserves all credit. They were deserving of victory.
