Organized by The Myrias Group, 35 people volunteered at Feeding America Southwest Virginia to stock food shelves, repackage bulk food items and assemble meal packages. This effort was centered around helping the 49 million Americans, including 16 million children and 5.3 million seniors, who face hunger in the U.S.

The event is part of the national days of service arranged by Ameriprise in partnership with Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization. Throughout November, more than 11,000 Ameriprise financial advisors, employees and clients will spend the day participating in over 500 events in all 50 states.

“We like to support FASWVA because they do so much beneficial work for the entire Roanoke Valley and beyond,” said Stewart Barnes. “Our clients and our staff are so willing to share their time and we have fun doing it.”

Feeding America Southwest Virginia has been awarded a $7,500 grant by Ameriprise Financial to continue to help the region’s children grow strong in mind and body, bring security to families and provide with The Myrias Group, independence for seniors to continue to live in dignity and good health. Ameriprise selected Feeding America Southwest Virginia for the award in support of its mission to eliminate hunger in the region. The donation is one of 85 grants to nonprofits recently announced by the company, totaling $1.2 million.

Feeding America Southwest Virginia was recommended for the grant by James Harlow, an Ameriprise financial advisor in Roanoke. “Ameriprise supports nonprofits like Feeding America Southwest Virginia because we know they are the foundation of strong, vital communities,” explained James Harlow. “This is a worthwhile cause benefiting our local area, and we’re so pleased to contribute to it.”

Feeding America Southwest Virginia was founded in 1981 and is in its 34th year of fighting hunger and changing lives through community partnerships. The Food Bank is an affiliate member of Feeding America. For the last three decades the Food Bank’s ultimate mission has remained the same: to eliminate hunger in the region.

The primary function of the Food Bank is to secure large quantities of food for the hungry. More than $23 million worth of food and grocery related products are channeled through a network of more than 350 partner feeding programs (in a 26 county and 9-city region) that provide food or meals to those in need.
