The Margaret Baker Foundation Board of Directors has announced scholarship assistance for men across the Commonwealth of Virginia who are currently or planning to continue their college, university, or other educational pursuits, studying in the areas of law enforcement or healthcare in the Roanoke Valley.
The Foundation has awarded over $215,000 in scholarships since its inception and looks forward to providing ongoing financial support to students.
Margaret R. Baker was a formidable business force in Roanoke for more than 40 years. She dedicated decades of her life to providing scholarships for young people throughout the state of Virginia. She served as Executive Director of the Miss Virginia Scholarship Program for 20 years.
“As soon as I was crowned Miss Virginia 1978 and embarked on my journey to Miss America, it became evident to me how well respected Margaret Baker and her Miss Virginia team were within the Miss America Program. Preparing for Miss America in 6 weeks was an arduous task but Margaret and her team gave me the confidence I needed! I will always be grateful for the Miss Virginia team then and now,” says Kylene Barker McNeill, Virginia’s first Miss America.
In addition, as part of our fundraising initiatives we are asking for support of “A Star Filled Evening,” on Sunday, September
29th at the home of Doctors KeviIn and Nancy Dye at Rockledge, on Mill Mountain. Highlighting the event will be Fox News Sunday Anchor, Shannon DePuy Bream, who also served as Miss Virginia 1990 and was a Top Ten Finalist at Miss America. In addition, we will feature Forever Miss Virginias including Kylene Barker McNeill, Miss Virginia 1978/Miss America 1979. and Carlehr Swanson, Miss Virginia 2024, as well as commemorating the anniversary of Alice “Sue” Williams, Miss Virginia 1958.
