Want to get out and enjoy Virginia’s fall colors? To help you get started, the Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) uses historical data and current reports from staff statewide to track and report foliage conditions on our website and social media. And, so you know when to start packing the car, we’ve also got you covered with suggestions for scenic driving tours that consistently deliver stunning fall foliage. Beginning at the highest elevations of Southwest Virginia and the Allegheny Mountains, Virginia’s fall color change proceeds downslope and eastward throughout the fall months. While predicting the exact timing of fall color change and intensity is difficult, this summer’s high temperatures and drought conditions are already causing an earlier color change in many parts of the state. “Virginia’s diverse hardwood forests are always spectacular in the fall,” said State Forester Rob Farrell. “The dry summer has put the trees on an earlier schedule, but we can still expect a show. From the golden hickories and birches, to the scarlet-red of the black gums and maples, our forests really know how to impress.” |
